Future Tasks

The following activities can be delineated in relation to the construction of the disposal facility for long-lived and /or HLW:

  • Regulatory guidelines shall be developed to identify the time schedule for the tasks and the relevant acceptance criteria.
  • Long-term program shall be established for the following issues of key importance:
  • geological studies (filtration, hydrogeology, geophysics, rock mechanics),
  • design of engineering protection (waste forms, cask design, backfilling of buffer character),
  • environmental studies (flow of surface waters, soil, atmosphere, food chain),
  • system integration (assessment of the pre- closure and post-closure situation),
  • safety assessments,
  • underground research laboratory (URL),
  • social dialogue, international co-operation,
  • A site shall be selected and licensed for the construction of a repository for the final disposal of HLW and spent fuels.
  • The repository shall be constructed and operated.
  • The repository facility shall be closed in the final stage of the work.
